Beale Air Force Base History
Like many other Air Force bases in the United States, Beale AFB got its’ start as an Army installation thanks to the United States entry into the Second World War. Camp Beale was named after Edward Fitzgerald Beale, who served in the 1800s as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and later as a Brigadier General in the California Militia.
Camp Beale opened in 1942 as a training area for the Army’s armored and infantry divisions and also served as a prisoner of war camp for German POWs. The POW area is still in existence to this day, and even features graffitti left behind by Axis prisoners on the walls of the holding cells.
Shortly after the United States Air Force became a separate branch of military service, Camp Beale became Beale Air Force Base, home of bomber and navigator training, circa 1948. A few years later in 1951, the Beale Bombing and Gunnery Range became active to train aviation engineers.
Between 1959 until 1965, Beale Air Force Base supported three Titan I missile sites near Lincoln, Chico and an area known as Sutter Buttes. On July 1, 1979, the 7th Missile Warning Squadron brought the Phased Array Warning System radar site (known as PAVE PAWS) to Beale. This 10-story structure can detect possible attack by sea-launched ballistic missiles or track a global satellite.
The 1960s were a time of change for Beale; it was designated as the home of the supersonic SR-71 spy plane, and in 1966 the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing began operations there. This type of mission would be augmented by the arrival of the first U-2 spy plane in 1976.
In 1990, defense budget issues resulted in the retirement of the SR-71, but watching from the air would still be an important part of the Beale AFB mission. The advent of Global Hawk-an unmanned aerial surveillance vehicle-brought Beale into one of the most modern of Air Force programs. In present times both the U-2 and Global Hawk are still operating at Beale along with air refueling missions and training.

Sonoma County is where the Charles Schultz Museum is located, paying tribute to the man who brought Charlie Brown and the rest of the Peanuts gang to newspapers all across the country. Sonoma County is also home to the Armstrong Redwoods.
There are plenty of other places in the area including Nevada County, which has its share of gold rush history, and Grass Valley which is known for its’ “old town” style.
A great deal of the recreational opportunities closer to the base itself are outdoors in nature, including bike trails and an authentic Chinese temple (Bok Kai Temple in Marysville) open on weekends and full of history.
Inprocessing and Check-In

New arrivals should expect to receive dental in-processing, Health Promotions, TRICARE and Patient Administration in-processing, Newcomer Orientation and First Term Airmen inprocessing where applicable.

If you are not able to get temporary lodging upon check-in due to a lack of rooms available on-base, you will be required to get a certificate of non-availability to file with your travel voucher; without this certificate you will not be reimbursed for lodging expenses off-base.
