History

Compared to other Army installations, Hunter is a relatively young operation. Many Army posts date all the way back to the Revolutionary War and in the Army’s history, some of those installations reverted to the Air Force when it became a separate branch of the military. But in this case, the reverse happened.

In 1967, the United States Air Force decided to close its’ base at Hunter Field, and it would not be long before the Army took over and established the U.S. Army Flight Training Center in association with the other flight training happening in the area at Fort Stewart.

By the time American involvement in Vietnam was at its’ height, Hunter was responsible for training Army helicopter pilots in an accelerated fashion; the installation would close briefly after the war.

Hunter would reopen again to train Airborne Rangers-when the Army started operations there again in 1974, the facility was redesignated as “a sub-post of Fort Stewart and a base for the 24th Infantry Division’s helicopter and support elements”.

In the late 1990s, a new facility was dedicated for the Departure/Arrival Airfield Control Group (DAACG), known as Truscott Air Terminal, and Hunter was selected by NASA as an alternate landing site for some space shuttle missions.

Today, the U.S. Army official site describes Hunter as an “important deployment and support base” working in a multi-service environment to provide support with its “existing airfield facilities and location adjacent to Fort Stewart and the east coast ports of Savannah and Charleston”.
