    The U.S. Air Force 502d Air Base Wing oversees JBSA. It emerged from merging Fort Sam Houston, the massive training wing at Lackland Air Force Base, and Randolph Air Force Base, home to the Air Education and Training Command. This combined base spans 67 square miles.

    Joint Base San Antonio Housing

    The military base offers a variety of housing options both on-base and off-base. On-base housing information is broke up into the three installments:

    JBSA Fort Sam Houston

    JBSA Lackland

    • Housing Assistance: The Military Housing Office at B 1215, 2525 Fairchild provides referral services for on-base housing and community accommodations.

    JBSA Randolph

    PCS and TDY Lodging

    Temporary lodging options are available at JBSA. These include the Temporary Lodging Facilities (TLF) at Lackland AFB, Visiting Airmen’s Quarters (VAQ) at Lackland AFB, Visiting Officers Quarters (VOQ) at Lackland AFB, Lodging (Billeting) Office at Randolph AFB, and the IHG Army Hotels at Fort Sam Houston.     Healthcare

    Joint Base San Antonio is a combination of three installments. Because of that, each have their own healthcare options. Below is the information on each healthcare option:

    JBSA – San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC)

    SAMMC is the Army’s premier modern healthcare facility and is the sole Level 1 trauma center. Located in the eastern sector of Fort Sam Houston, it boasts:

    • 450 inpatient beds (expandable to 651 for wartime).
    • 48 intensive care beds.
    • 40 beds dedicated to the Institute of Surgical Research.
    • 12 operating rooms, five oral-surgery suites, four dental rooms, a diagnostic radiology center, and same-day surgery suite.

    JBSA – Lackland: Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center (WHASC)

    WHASC, situated at Lackland Air Force Base, is the Air Force’s largest medical facility. It includes:

    • A Family Emergency Center is open 24/7.
    • Comprehensive outpatient specialties.
    • Family health, internal medicine, and pediatric services.

    Dental Services: Dunn Dental Clinic and Air Force Post Graduate Dental School offer dental care for active duty members. There is no routine dental care for family on-site, only emergencies.

    JBSA – Randolph Air Force Base

    The 559th Medical Squadron delivers general outpatient services to active-duty personnel, their families, and retirees. Services include:

    • General outpatient medical services.
    • Dental care (active duty only).
    • Note: No on-site emergency care. For emergencies, visit SAMMC (17 miles away) or WHASC (30 miles away).

    Childcare

    Joint Base San Antonio is home to several Child Development Centers (CDCs). As Joint Base San Antonio is a combination of three bases, there are three separate areas offering CDCs. They include Lackland AFB, Randolph AFB, and Fort Sam Houston. The centers offer full-day care from early morning until evening, with all centers closed on weekends and federal holidays. They provide services for children as young as infants, to school aged.

    Similar to the childcare situation, Joint Base San Antonio offers school options depending on which of the three bases a family lives on or lives close to.
