Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point History

Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point is home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and has a profound history. It played a significant role in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm, among other conflicts. Established in 1941 and commissioned in 1942, the base was initially named Cunningham Field after Lieutenant Colonel Alfred A. Cunningham, the Marine Corps’ first aviator. It later adopted its name after a local post office set among cherry trees. Over the decades, Cherry Point has consistently supported military efforts, from training missions during World War II to strike missions in Operation Enduring Freedom.
The base suffered a setback on September 8, 2007, when a fire devastated the headquarters building. However, a new building began construction with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 29, 2009.
