Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow California

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow is roughly halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This installation is said to be the second largest employer in the nearby area and is broken up into three sites with more than six thousand total acres. The military footprint here may be smaller than some bases, but the logistics work is crucial to the Marine Corps mission; there are only three logistics bases in the entire Marine Corps.

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California Mission & Units

The MCLB Barstow official site states that the mission of this Marine Corps base is to “enable operational readiness through infrastructure, logistics and services” in support of the Marine Corps mission worldwide. MCLB Barstow crews maintain ground combat gear in support of West Coast military installations.

Important operations at the base include, but are not limited to the Fleet Support Division, Maintenance Center Barstow, and S-6 Communications. Unlike some other military bases, Barstow does not feature a comparatively large number of tenant units or activities.

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California History

MCLB Barstow got its’ start as the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies in 1942; the United States Navy gave jurisdiction of this site to the Marine Corps and it served as a storage operation during World War Two for Fleet Marine Forces in the Pacific.

World War II saw this facility growing so rapidly that another  2,000 acres of land was required-it was obtained in 1946; several years later in 1961 MCLB added the Depot Maintenance Activity, an important change in the mission there.

The base was re-designated as a Marine Corps Logistics Base in the 1970s, and that mission continues to this day, with Barstow being part of a three-base operation that includes MCLB Albany, Georgia; MCLB Barstow, California; and Blount Island Command, Jacksonville, Florida. Each portion of the operation, MCLB Barstow included, provides regional support for a certain portion of Marine Corps forces.

MCLB Barstow is composed of three principal sites including more than 2400 acres dedicated to rifle and pistol training.
