Convert military time to civilian time or vice versa with this calculator, plus see what time is it in military time right now. Military time uses a 24-hour clock where American standard or civilian time uses a 12-hour clock with “A.M.” and “P.M.” designations. The 24-hour clock is also known as the International Standard for time-telling because the 12-hour clock is primarily only used in North America outside of the U.S. Armed Forces.

How to Calculate Military Time
The simplest way to calculate military time is if you see an hour greater than 12, subtract 12 to get the p.m. time. For example, it’s 1700. (17 – 12 = 5:00 pm).
Writing Military Time
Unlike standard use of the 12-hour and 24-hour clocks, you don’t place a colon between the hour and the minutes when writing military time.
Examples of Military Time
- Military time 2020 is 8:20 PM using a 12-hour clock notation.
- Military time 1915 is: 07:15 PM using 12-hour clock notation.
- Military time 1530 is: 03:30 PM using 12-hour clock notation.
- Military time 1430 is: 02:30 PM using 12-hour clock notation.
- Military time 1645 is: 04:45 PM using 12-hour clock notation.
European Time
The 24-hour clock is the main format used in Europe. While it is known as military time to Americans it is simply a 24-hour clock to most Europeans. In Europe, listed times therefore do not include the indicators ‘AM’ or ‘PM’.
