Naval Weapons Station Earle

by Joe Wallace

Naval Weapons Station Earle

Naval Weapons Station Earle is located in Colts Neck, New Jersey in Monmouth County. The area is known for its orchards, horse farms, and scenery.

NWS Earle is surrounded by more than ten thousand acres, and it’s said that this area has some of the most beautiful views and landscapes of any Navy base in the country. NWS Earle has two basic areas; a “mainside” and a waterfront site roughly 15 miles away in Sandy Hook Bay. The two areas are linked by a private federal road.

Find information about including the main commercial and DSN numbers for the base, information on basic services, base transportation, lodging for TDY and PCSing personnel, and inprocessing.

Mission & Units

Naval Weapons Station Earle is responsible for operating a type of ordnance facility known as RSSI, which stands for Receipts, Storage, Segregation, And Issue.

This operation supports the U.S. Navy Atlantic fleet in a multi-service environment. The Earle mission includes supporting Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and DoD conventional ammunition demands. It also provides homeport services.

Important missions and units include:

  • Explosive Ordnance Disposal (Mobile Unit 12)
  • MSNAP
  • Naval Operational Support Center (Reserves)
  • NAVFAC MidLant (Public Works)
  • NAVOSH Storefront
  • Navy Criminal Investigative Service
  • Navy Munitions Command
  • OHMSETT

History

Once the United States got involved in World War Two, certain strategic needs became clear fairly quickly. One such need? An ammunition depot to serve mission needs in the New York area, but safely tucked away from major cities and other densely populated areas.

It would take until 1943 to break ground on what would be known as Naval Ammunition Depot Earle. The facility was named after Rear Admiral Ralph Earle, who headed up the World War One-era Bureau of Ordnance.

The ammo depot would remain as such all the way until 1974 when it was redesignated as Naval Weapons Station Earle. That Weapons Station mission continues to this day; NWS Earle is also the homeport to Combat Logistics Squadron 2, USNS Supply, and USNS Arctic.

Surrounding Area

The “Mainside” at NWS Earle is in Colts Neck, which has its share of orchards, parks, and outdoor recreation areas. The portion of the base known as the Waterfront is located in the Leonardo section of Middletown. NWS Earle is  surrounded by New Jersey’s horse farming community. It’s also a short drive away from the famous Jersey Shore.

The base is about an hour south of New York City, and while rush hour complications may make that trip take longer, NWS Earle’s location does make NYC attractions including concerts, Broadway shows, and the many art galleries and museums far more accessible.

Inprocessing and Check-In

All troops PCSing to NWS Earle are directed to report to the Administration Department located in Building C-2. Those who must report in after duty hours are directed to proceed to or contact the Front Gate Security Detachment, who will in turn request assistance from the Command Duty Officer.

Some may be reporting to Earle for duty on board ships using NWS Earle as homeport. If this applies to you, report via the Leonardo waterfront gate. You will complete check-in at the ship. Those reporting to ships that are already underway must check in with COMLOGRU TWO Det Earle (in Building R-3A).

Those who are PCSing to Earle for duty with the Mobile Mine Assembly Group are directed to report to the Mainside area on Route 34.

There are no DoD schools on board NWS Earle. Public school options include one high school, one middle school, and two schools for elementary-age children.

Bus service may be available depending on how far you are located from the school (two miles or more). Call the NWS Earle School Liaison Officer (SLO) at 732-866-2472 or DSN 449-2472. Call the SLO for information about transfer requirements, shot records needed, and other concerns.

Housing

Compared to some other bases, on-post housing may seem limited. This is true even for unaccompanied troops; family housing at Earle is limited to approximately 130 units for junior enlisted and officers and there are fewer than 100 rooms for unaccompanied service members at the time of this writing.

Waiting lists will apply and the length of your wait depends greatly on pay grade and the number of bedrooms you require.

Before entering into any legally binding agreement for housing, contact the Naval Weapons Station Earle Family Housing Welcome Center at 1-800-987-4775 or DSN 312-449-2177.

Applications for space on base in Navy Family Housing require a completed DD Form 1746 submitted to the Family Housing Welcome Center. You must attach a copy of your PCS orders with the application plus a current Emergency Data record.

Those who need single-sailor housing as “Geographical Bachelors” are directed to call the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) Manager at 732-866-2864.

PCS and TDY Lodging

TLF facilities for those PCSing or coming to the area on TDY orders are available on a limited basis, provided by Deer Run Lodging. There are more than 20 rooms and 10 fully furnished townhomes. There are no pet facilities on base at the time of this writing.

In-town hotels are another option but you will need a certificate of non-availability from the Deer Run Lodging staff to claim such off-base lodging expenses on your travel voucher.

Reservations are possible 12 months in advance for active-duty servicemembers. Retirees and DoD civilians may book up to six months ahead of time. Call 732-866-2448 for information and directions.

Transportation

There is no base transportation onboard NWS Earle. Depending on the time of day you arrive, the usual ride-sharing, commercial taxi services, and other options may or may not be available. The closest major airports to Earle are Newark Liberty International Airport (just over 30 miles away) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (approximately 35 miles away).

Be sure to ask your sponsor about rush hour complications in this area as you may find taxi rides or other journeys during peak travel times to be quite delayed.

Vehicle Registration And Driver’s License

All privately owned vehicles operating onboard the Weapons Station must carry state-required insurance and safety equipment. There is no requirement to register a vehicle on NWS Earle at the time of this writing but all vehicles are subject to searches, 100% identity checks, and other routine measures and not-so-routine mission requirements.
