Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. This Air Force base was named for a Navy test pilot who died in an air crash in 1941. Lt. Seymour A. Johnson is thought by some to be the only Navy officer to have an Air Force base named after him, but this is not true-Beale Air Force Base in California was named after Navy Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, who served in the 1800s before going on to become an officer in a California militia.

History
Seymour Johnson AFB began as Seymour Johnson Field, created during the earliest days of World War Two when the United States War Department authorized the creation of a new military technical school two miles outside the city of Goldsboro.
In 1943 the base also began operating the Provisional Overseas Replacement Training Center, designed to prepare troops for overseas deployment. Around the same time the base established Army Air Corps training with something called the Aviation Cadet Pre-Training School.
Aircraft training operations there including P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft which became the main operation But once the war ended, the base was converted to an out-processing center and was eventually deactivated in 1946. But a few years later a community effort to convince the Department of Defense to reopen Seymour Johnson was successful; the base reopened as an Air Force Base under the jurisdiction of Tactical Air Command. Since that time the mission has included B-52 bombers, KC-10 and KC-135 tankers from Strategic Air Command and F-4 and National Guard F-16.
Today, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is home to the 4th Fighter Wing, training and flying real-world missions with F-15E Strike Eagles. The 916th Air Refueling Wing is a tenant unit at Seymour Johnson, an Air Force Reserve Command Wing under Air Mobility Command flying KC-135R Stratotankers refueling missions and much more.
