Surrounding Area
Those in need of on-base services have plenty of options in the local area. Luke Air Force Base roughly 30 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. There is plenty to do if you are into the great outdoors. Grand Canyon and Flagstaff ski slopes are nearby, plus Camelback Mountain and Superstition Mountain Museum.
Sports fans will definitely want to see the MLB Arizona Diamondbacks or the Arizona Rattlers (AFL). Also nearby, the Out Of Africa wildlife park in Camp Verde, AZ, and Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. There are plenty of other attractions nearby like the Chandler, AZ-based Rawhide Western Town and Steakhouse, and Biltmore Fashion Park.
Inprocessing and Check-In
All PCSing soldiers and those on TDY orders are encouraged to discuss check-in procedures with the Battalion command support staff at Battalion Headquarters at 602-254-1765 or 1766. There are several issues that are unique to assignments like these.
Soldiers may inprocess at HQ but may not be assigned there. Those on PCS orders may find themselves geographically separated from headquarters, working at a recruiting station or elsewhere. Assignments may not be available until after check-in and inprocessing, discuss your PCS move with your sponsor and the gaining command for best results.
Health Care
USAREC Phoenix Battalion is not part of a military base, it is an operation in the local community. You should contact your TRICARE rep as soon as you have PCS orders to the local area as you may be required, based on the geographic location of your daily duty, to use in-network care by non-military providers. Those stationed near Luke Air Force Base may have the option to get care there, but it’s best to coordinate with TRICARE before making any choices about healthcare options.
Child Care
Due to the unique nature of Army Recruiting duty, many PCSing soldiers will need to take advantage of the help provided by MilitaryChildCare.com, which is a DoD online request system for care. It’s also best to contact the USAREC Phoenix Battalion Family Services Coordinator at 602-254-0569. Those stationed near a military base (Luke AFB, Yuma Proving Ground, and others) may have the option to request CDC child care there depending on demand and other variables.
Household Goods
All inbound soldiers PCSing to the battalion are directed to track and manage their household goods shipments via the Defense Personal Property System at Move.mil.
Dependent And Retiree ID Card Renewal, Replacement, New Issue
The closest on-base facility for ID card services is Luke AFB. All personnel are directed to use the RAPIDS system to schedule appointments for any CAC, dependent ID, and retiree ID services. Walk-ins are discouraged due to high volumes of requests and the wait time for walk-in services may be as long as three hours. Certain ID card services require certain paperwork; this may include (where applicable) DD Form 1172 signed by sponsor witnessed by a DEERS Verifying Official or Notary Signature and Seal OR:
- Special or General Power of Attorney PLUS
- Two forms of valid ID; one of which must be a valid state or federal government-issued picture identification
- Any additional supporting documentation needed situationally such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree, etc.
Schools
The Phoenix Battalion is not located on a military installation so there are no DoD school options; nearby Luke Air Force Base does not have DoD schools on base. Local school districts for those physically serving in the Phoenix area include:
- Avondale Elementary School District #44
- Litchfield Elementary School District
- Dysart Unified School District
Soldiers should not assume they will serve in the Phoenix area; contact the Battalion Education Specialist at 602-254-3136 for assistance with school choices and other issues. To attend any public schools in Arizona, students must have either proof of all required immunizations or an exemption form.
Housing
Soldiers assigned to the Battalion may physically serve anywhere in the state where they are required; serving in the Phoenix area itself is not guaranteed. Housing issues will depend greatly on the soldier’s assignment so this issue is best dealt with initially with talking with your sponsor and the command support staff about possible locations you may serve in. Those physically serving in the Battalion HQ area may have the option (depending on circumstances) to apply for housing via the Luke Air Force Base Housing Office. Call them at Call 623-856-6629 or DSN 896-6629 for assistance.
PCS and TDY Lodging
Unless you are able to book TDY lodging at Luke Air Force Base, there are no military TLFs or other DoD-run lodging opportunities directly associated with the Battalion; contact your sponsor for advice on where to stay in the local area.
If you are able to make reservations at Luke, the Fighter Country Inn handles temporary lodging there; check-in at the reception desk, located at 7012 N. Bong Lane in Building 660 or call (623) 856-3941 or DSN 896-3941 for reservations or booking information.
Transportation
Transportation from the airport will involve the usual ride-sharing, commercial buses or taxis, shuttles, etc. Coordinate with your sponsor for best results; rush hour and peak travel times can complicate PCS travel; know the issues before you arrive!
Vehicle Registration And Driver’s License
Arizona state law includes minimum auto insurance requirements. New arrivals are permitted to drive in Arizona using a valid driver’s license from another country where applicable.
Privately owned vehicles registered in another state must be registered in-state as soon as the owner becomes an Arizona resident. Most vehicles may be registered for either one or two years at a time, depending on emissions testing requirements for a given motor vehicle.
